Course description

During this 8 week course you will learn the coiling, slab building and pinch pot techniques and you will get a chance to spend up to 2 days throwing at the potters’ wheel. You will also learn to work with coloured slips to paint and decorate your own pieces before they are fired for the first time, and you will have a chance to learn to glaze your pieces before they go in their final firing. This means you will be part of the entire process, from the first clay ball until the finished piece, getting a great understanding of the whole pottery process and trying out all techniques to see which one you find yourself most attracted to. During the last weeks you will be able to work on your own project and our teacher will assist you to make sure you get the best results.

During your days of practice at the wheel you will learn how to centre clay and form a basic shape.

This course is ideal for beginners or intermediate level makers. Also suitable for experienced potters which are advised to speak to the teacher in the first class if there are specific skills that they would like to focus on during the course.

What to bring

Remember to bring an apron and do not dress up in your favourite outfit as clay can get messy.

Ideally have your nails cut short and your hair tied up.

Materials and tools included in the course

Clay - Any fired clay will be charged at £5+VAT per kg. This works out around £2 for an average piece and it is aimed at discouraging students from firing pieces they do not intend to keep: clay can only be recycled before it is fired. There is a maximum of 2 plates/wide pieces of up to 25cm diameter during the entire course and all pieces to a maximum height of 25cm. Any larger pieces or pieces in excess of the limits will be charged at £10+VAT per kg.

Glazing - The cost of glazing in any of our studio glazes is included in the course.

Tools - you will have access to all the tools you need for the workshop.

Terms of cancellation
